Calculating an exact age sounds trivial and is not, because months have different lengths and leap years interrupt the pattern. For anything official — eligibility cutoffs, legal thresholds, visa and pension dates — the precise figure matters.

How to use the Age Calculator

  1. Enter the date of birth
  2. The age is calculated against today by default
  3. Change the comparison date to work out age at any point in time
  4. Read the exact years, months and days, plus the totals

Why month arithmetic is awkward

Months vary between 28 and 31 days, so 'one month later' has no fixed length. Date libraries handle this by convention, and the conventions differ.

The familiar edge case: what is one month after 31 January? Most systems answer 28 February (or 29 in a leap year), clamping to the last valid day. But that makes the operation non-reversible — one month back from 28 February gives 28 January, not the 31st you started from.

This is why age is calculated by counting whole years first, then whole months, then the remaining days, rather than by dividing a total day count.

Leap years

A year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400. So 1900 was not a leap year and 2000 was — a rule that caused a notable crop of software bugs in both years.

People born on 29 February have a birthday only once every four years. Jurisdictions handle the legal date differently: some treat 28 February as the anniversary in common years, others 1 March. It matters for thresholds like voting age or pension eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Does this account for leap years?

Yes. The calculation uses real calendar dates, so leap days are counted correctly in both the day totals and the year/month/day breakdown.

Can I calculate age at a future date?

Yes — change the comparison date. Useful for checking eligibility cutoffs, such as whether someone will be old enough by a given deadline.

How is age counted in different countries?

Most of the world counts completed years since birth. The traditional East Asian system counted a newborn as one and added a year at New Year rather than on the birthday — South Korea formally moved to the international system in 2023.

Why does the month count seem off by a day?

Because months have unequal lengths, the remainder after counting whole months depends on which months were crossed. This is correct calendar arithmetic, not an error.
