Working out how many days separate two dates sounds trivial and is not, because month lengths vary and leap years break the pattern. Counting on a calendar is slow and error-prone past a few weeks.

How to use the Date Calculator

  1. Enter the start date
  2. Enter the end date
  3. Read the difference in days, weeks and months
  4. Check whether your use case needs inclusive or exclusive counting

Inclusive or exclusive counting

The question 'how many days from 1 March to 5 March' has two defensible answers, and which you want depends on context.

Exclusive counting gives 4 — the difference between the dates. This is standard for durations: how long something lasted, how many days until a deadline.

Inclusive counting gives 5 — both endpoints counted. This is standard for billing periods, hotel nights, rental days and most legal notice periods.

Getting this wrong by one day routinely causes invoicing disputes and missed legal deadlines. When a contract specifies a number of days, check which convention it means.

Business days and month-end

Calendar days and business days diverge quickly — 30 calendar days is roughly 21 working days, before public holidays, which vary by country and often by region.

Month arithmetic has its own ambiguity. What is one month after 31 January? Most systems clamp to 28 or 29 February, which makes the operation non-reversible: going back one month gives 28 January, not 31. Where exact dates matter — subscription renewals, interest periods — specifying a day count rather than a month count avoids the problem entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Does this count leap years correctly?

Yes. The calculation uses real calendar dates, so leap days are included wherever they fall in the range.

Is the end date included in the count?

The difference is exclusive — 1 March to 5 March gives 4 days. For inclusive counting, as used in billing and notice periods, add one.

Can it count only working days?

Not currently — it counts calendar days. Business day counts need a holiday calendar, which varies by country and often by state or region.

How are months counted when lengths differ?

By counting whole calendar months first, then the remaining days. This is why a 'month' can be 28 to 31 days depending on which months the range crosses.
